Greece with its sunny weather, long sandy beaches and wonderful food has been beckoning us for the past 9 years. But some other priorities in life always took over until this summer we decided its now or never!
So on the 19th of May 2011 we took ourselves ( 2 adults & 2 kids-- one is nearly a tween) to Athens.
We stayed over night in Dubai which is a dry horrid place , where we've been so many times in transit that this time we only ate & slept to kill time.
Athens was as i thought it will be..... crowded, warm, different language which sounds so alien to us and full of graphiti all over the place. Our hotel was right in front of The Syntagma Square which is in front of the Parliament house.
Syntagma square is famous for the changing of the guards, which happens every hour what ever the weather. The guards wear huge shoes with pom-poms attached to the top! looks really funny. They have to keep a serious face even when the crowd is sniggering at them. Poor fellows!!
The Metro station at Syntagma had huge halls for exhibitions. At that time thay were having a fair selling things like glaced nuts, dried garlic, red chillies, cheese and olive oils which are of different colours and flavours.
The Temple Of Zeus.
The Corinth Canal.
The Lion's Gate, Mycenae.
The Amphitheatre at Epidarvous.
Beautiful Santorini
The volcanic island of Santorini was a dream. With blue skies and blue waters all around ,it was beautiful. We went for a crater walk and walked miles between villages to see the coast line.We stayed in Fira and went to Oia to see the sun set.Had wonderful Greek salads with Santorini wine.
I am planning to retire to one of the Greek islands after twenty years:)
