A Short Trip To Pondicherry
Last week of July we had to go to Pondicherry or Puducherry as everybody calls it now.It was refreashing to leave Kolkata and get away from everything. It was Rajiv's twentyfifth silver jubilee anniversary in Jipmer,
On the way we visited the Marina beach and Saint Thomas's church in Chennai.
The beach had fish stalls all along it.The sky was cloudy which was a blessing as it was a long walk from the car park to the beach!
On the way we also saw the Shore Temples of Mahabalipuram. It is an Unesco Heritage site.
In Pondy we stayed in Hotel Promenade. It was an old colonial building with wooden shutters. Our rooms overlooked the sea.The blue sea and the blue sky really took my breath away.I felt that i could sit there for hours looking at the rise and fall of the waves.
The French part of the town where the Aurobindo Ashram is,is quiet and peaceful. The names of the road are in French.I wonder why people have not changed it considering the fact that they are a part of Tamil Nadu!!
The local part as it is called is like any other south Indian town.Crowded and bustling with life. There were people everywhere... on scooters, on bicycles, in cars( which was mostly Ford Ikons for some reason).Everyone was in a hurry compared to the French part where life seemed to have stood still.People walked slowly to their destination taking their time. I wonder if there is a conflict between the two parts.
