Leh-- The Kingdom Of The Gods!

Beautiful Leh

This summer took us to the beautiful town of Leh.From the 17th Century till 1949, Leh,the main town in Ladakh was the hub of the caravan trade between Punjab and central Asia and between Kashmir and Tibet.Leh is at an altitude of 11,483ft.Our first view of the mountains was from the plane. After Delhi's boiling heat it was a pleasure just to look at them. The children couldn't wait to get down from the plane.

The town is dominated by the nine storeyed Leh palace.Sadly,it is closed to the public. One can walk upto the top to get a wonderful view of the town.

Several of Ladakh's world famous monastries are located along the river Indus. The bluish green Indus sparkled as it ran beside the town. Some of the monastries we visited are ...

Hemis :

This is Ladakh's largest and richest monastrey.

It has beautiful murals and thangkas.

Hemis is renowned for its spetacular annual festival.

Thikse:

Shey:

This was the ancient capital of Ladakh. Its palace has a temple with a gigantic 17thCentury Buddha image.

Oil Lamp.

Sangam-- The river Indus and the Zanskar met at this point.Indus is bluish green and the Zanskar is grey.It is a beautiful sight.

Views while going to Pang gong Tso:

We went through the Changla Pass which is the third highest motorable road in the world. The pass had been closed the day before due to heavy snowfall,So the day we went it was still covered with snow.

Living in a hot humid city like Kolkata, the children had never seen snow.It was a big exciting thing for them.

Pang gong Tso as it is called is 30% in India and 70% in Tibet(China). It is a brackish lake which reflects many colours. It is 130 Kms long and is at an altitude of 14500ft.

Views while going to Khardungla Pass:

This pass was closed due to snow and we could go only to a place called south Pullu which is 12kms from the pass.
